Upgrade to an advanced septic system with grant funds through Brevard County’s Save Our Indian River Lagoon Grant Program

If you have been looking for ways to help the Indian River Lagoon, if you’ve been considering upgrading your septic system, or if your septic system is currently, or soon to be, in need of repairs or replacement, now could be an ideal time to upgrade. Grant funds of up to $18,000 are now available for your property to help cover the cost of upgrading to an advanced treatment septic system.

What is a NSF245 Aerobic Advanced Treatment Septic System?

They are like a mini water treatment plant right on your property. They provide more sewage treatment than a conventional septic system. Advanced systems provide advanced treatment through multiple chambers, filters, baffles, aerators and/or the re-circulation of wastewater passing through them. Some systems are utilized as a drip system allowing reuse of the water as a natural sprinkler system

How long does the upgrade process take?

The process can take several months. Upgrading requires a Florida Department of Health, engineering for some systems, abandonment of the old septic tank and installation of the new system.

How much is a NS245 Advanced Treatment Septic System?

Upgrading your system can cost $12,000 to $22,000 depending on the specifics (engineering) of your property (bedrooms, pool, square footage, drip system)

Where is this grant coming from? Is this even real?

In 2016, Brevard County Voters approved a half-cent sales tax increase to Save Our Indian River Lagoon in order to fund such a project like this. $18,000 is available to be utilized for the upgrade.

How does upgrading to an NSF245 Advanced Treatment Septic System really benefit the lagoon?

Nitrogen reduction of 50-90% more than concedntional septic systems are a main goal of the funding of this grant. Fewer algae blooms, cleaner groundwater flowing to the Indian River Lagoon and a decrease in fish kills.

Are there extra costs associated with an advanced treatment septic system?

It depends on whether you choose an advanced drainfield or an advanced tank. Drainfield upgrades are not anticipated to cost more. Advanced treatment tanks with pumps require an Operation and Maintenance permit from the Florida Department of Health and biannual maintenance by a septic contractor. This permit and maintenance requirement typically costs $375 per year.

Is upgrading to an advanced treatment septic system free?

The cost of upgrading to an advanced treatment septic system varies depending on the specific needs of your property. Save Our Indian River Lagoon Grant Funds are only available for select properties with septic systems that pose a high risk of pollution to our local water-bodies. The grants are intended to cover all of the upgrade cost for most situations. Please call us to review 321.745.0111
